Saleshando for popular election of President

Dumelang Saleshando says it has been the position of the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) that the president of the country should be elected directly by the voters.

He suggested a referendum for Batswana to decide on a motion tabled by Botswana National Front (BNF) MP, Akanyang Magama, calling for direct election of president. He suggested that the elected President be allowed to choose the vice-president until the end of his tenure. He told a muted but attentive Parliament on Friday that the nation was looking to one individual to decide who will be the next vice-president.

Saleshando says he supports Phandu Skelemani for the post of vice-president because he is firm and independent unlike many of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) MPs. "We cannot have a system where future leaders are chosen by one person," Saleshando argued, saying that the current system was a threat to democracy as it compelled people to express confidence or lack of it in people whose presidency was already decided. He stated that former President, Ketumile Masire's book shows that the choice of then vice-president, Lenyeletse Seretse, was taken to console Bangwato after the death of Seretse.
