FRANCISTOWN: The Botswana Congress Party (BCP) leader, Dumelang Saleshando has said he is ready to challenge President Ian Khama in a direct election for head of state.

Saleshando threw down the gauntlet at a massive political rally he addressed on Sunday in Francistown together with other BCP heavyweights like the party's organising secretary, Vain Mamela.

He dismissed people who think that opposition parties will shy away from a direct presidential election against Khama. "We want a president to be directly elected because he is the one who makes executive decisions in the country. He appoints people to key positions like the commissioner of police, the attorney general and even the chief justice of the country," said Saleshando. He stated that the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) is in turmoil and is leading the country on a downward spiral.
