Safari lodge for CKGR

Lodge operator Safari & Adventure Company has been granted permission to set up inside the Central Kgalagadi Game Reserve.

The Department of Wildlife and National Parks under which the CKGR falls has allocated a lease for the operation of a lodge, north of Molapo village. The operator will pay four percent royalties and a lease rental fee of P175.000 per year, according to the the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Board.

The CKGR has been at the centre of a major conflict between the Basarwa who were evicted from the park on the one hand, and government, which ordered their eviction. A bruising case ended at the High Court which declared that the eviction was illegal and ordered that Basarwa who belonged inside be allowed access to the park. In a move that has drawn criticism locally and internationally, government refuses to allow Basarwa access to the borehole it shut in the build-up to the eviction, while government argues that it is under no obligation to provide water to people within the park. Furthermore, Basarwa are barred from drilling their own boreholes.
