SADC needs to ensure food security - Wotho

The development of the seed sector offers a unique means of enhancing crop productivity and livelihoods amongst small farmers in southern Africa.

Ministry of Agriculture's Deputy Permanent Secretary, Edison Wotho said this when addressing an annual collaborators' meeting organised by International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre in Gaborone last week.

Watho said quality seed of improved varieties produced and marketed through the formal seed sector would provide that foundational genetic potential needed by farmers. "However, the access to quality seed by farmers varies across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) due to the differences amongst states in the development of their seed sectors. Furthermore, the region faces the frequent occurrence of drought and the uncertain consequences of climate change," he said.
