SA strike threatens fuel, retail chains

Botswana could soon suffer shortages if the open-ended strike by more than 70,000 truck drivers in South Africa drags on for too long.

Already, the strike has put pressure on imports of fuel and supermarket products in Botswana. Over the weekend, the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) and three other unions downed tools demanding a 20 percent salary increase over the next two years, housing allowances and shorter working hours.

Botswana presently imports nearly all the 850 million litres of fuel it consumes annually from South Africa.
