Rural people terrified by climate change - study

Rural people have greater knowledge and appreciation of climate change - and it terrifies them, a recent study by a team of researchers from the Subsidiary Body on Scientific and Technology Applications, has established.

The study that moved away from city people to focus on folks in Kgalagadi and Maun found that the people there are aware of the implications of climate change.  The people, who were drawn from different age groups, stations in life and gender, fear that climate change will impoverish them. They cite the reduction in rainfall, especially in the years after 1977, a shift in rainfall patterns, colder winters and hotter summers and much wetter spells whenever they occur.

A member of the team and University of Botswana (UB) environmental science lecturer, Professor Julius Atlhopheng told The Monitor in an interview that respondents were able to provide information that supported scientific models on the effects of climate change in Botswana.
