Rural dev policy: Finance ministry only coordinates - Gaolathe

Finance and Development Planning Minister Baledzi Gaolathe has told Parliament that the implementation of the Revised Policy for Rural Development is spread across all ministries, while his ministry plays the coordination role. Consequently, programmes and projects directed at effecting the policy are discernable from implementing ministries' budget allocations.

He explained that his ministry, as the coordinator, and not implementer, does not have specific programmes and projects that directly effect the policy. Gaolathe was answering Boteti North MP, Slumber Tsogwane. Tsogwane had asked him to state his ministry's 2007/08 projects/programmes aimed at effecting the Rural Development Policy.

Gaolathe further explained that notwithstanding the above scenario, and to the extent that the focus of the Revised National Policy for Rural Development is to improve rural livelihoods by promoting productive activities and by providing infrastructure and social services to the rural areas, his ministry is engaged in projects that facilitate the realisation of the policy focus areas.
