Road accidents hamper productivity

FRANCISTOWN: The Department of Road Transport and Safety (DRTS) says road accidents negatively affect productivity in Botswana.

"They have serious implications on productivity and the growth of the economy since they waste the investment made in human resources and other assets of this nation," chief transport officer, Godwin Tlhogo said at a safe cycling awareness campaign held in Tutume over the weekend. He noted that road traffic crash victims are often the skilled and well-educated scarce resource.

"It is therefore vital to reduce these traffic injuries in order to achieve socio-economic development and to allow ordinary people to feel safe and secure when using roads," he said. He lamented that the campaign against road accidents waged by both government and non-governmental organisations has not borne the exepected fruits.
