Rising food prices eat into consumers' pockets

Consumers have been hard-hit by rising food prices, giving credence to warnings by international bodies of high global food prices.

Locally January inflation hit 7.9 percent, its highest in 20 months making life difficult for ordinary Batswana.

Number-crunching however, is not uppermost in the minds of ordinary Batswana, for whom rising food prices are a grim reality encountered everyday on the shelves of supermarkets. Basic commodities such as milk, cooking oil and others are rising, while disposable incomes are static.
