Rise in drowning cases worries Maun police

MAUN: Police in Maun have expressed worry at the increase in drowning cases in the Thamalakane river.

It was reported that a 22-year-old man of Sexaxa settlement drowned at around 13 hours last Friday after his fibre glass canoe tumbled several times in the crocodile infested river.

A colleague said while they were crossing the river, the deceased stretched his hand and told him that he wanted to drink the flowing water using both hands, but while quenching his thirst the cargo-laden canoe capsized, killing him instantly. The colleague managed to swim to safety and watched helplessly as his friend drowned. Botswana Defence Force (BDF) scuba divers and Botswana police were called to the scene and managed to retrieve the body from the river. No foul play was suspected.
