Residents up in arms over illegal waste dumping

Residents of Maruso settlement, in the Southern District, are up in arms over illegal dumping of liquid waste in their territory by a waste removal company.

The company at the centre of the accusations, Chobe Civils, was sub contracted to remove liquid waste from Nthwalang Junior Secondary School when the school maintenance project was commissioned. Now the firm is being accused of endangering the lives of residents of Digawana village and Maruso settlement as well as their livestock.  The accusations follow reports that Chobe Civils, sub-contracted by Cul-De-Sac, disposed of the liquid waste within the Maruso settlement environs, without the knowledge of residents.

To make matters worse, the residents say the waste is dumped in a shallow pit, which imperils their lives and pollutes the environment.  Speaking to Mmegi, Ramaabanyane Mokotedi, a resident of Maruso, said at the weekend that they first noticed that the company was using the outskirts of their settlement as a dumping site on March 9, and reported the matter to their chief, and later to their area councillor.
