Residents cry for electricity

BOROLONG: Residents occupying new plots known as Self-Help Housing Agency (SHHA) here have complained that they have been without electricity while the rest of the village has enjoyed the service for long.

Villagers said they have long waited for electricity and complained several times to the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) without success. One of the residents, Oratile Chuma said she applied for electricity seven years ago. The BPC said their plots were far away from the supply box, which is even too small to cover them all, she related. She said some people have relocated to rent houses in nearby Francistown because they did not want to stay in the dark bush. She cried that thieves use the cover of darkness to terrorise them.

"We have bought solar panels for lighting, but the problem is that not all of us can afford to buy them because they are expensive," she said.Another resident, Onalenna Lupe, said she cannot start her at-home business because there is no electricity in the area. She revealed that while she applied for electricity four years ago, her new neighbour has the resource."I went to BPC to question why electricity was connected to him when he is a new dweller and they said his yard was next to an electricity pole," she said.
