Residents complain of high power connection costs

ZWENSHAMBE: Poor electricity supply was a major topic of discussion during President Ian Khama's visit to Zwenshambe village recently.

In his welcome address, Kgosi Moses Mabutho said villagers are concerned about exorbitant quotations they get for electricity installation from Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) despite government's standard charge of P5,000. "We continue to receive skyrocketing quotations for electricity installation some as high as P300,000. This is in contradiction to the government's standard price of P5,000.  We took the matter with the then Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Affairs Dr Ponatshego Kedikilwe before he was elevated to his current post of Vice President and he promised to have the problem resolved," he said.

Former Francistown mayor, Peter Ngoma said although the village got electricity some 15 years ago, it was disappointing that half of the village is still in the dark. He said the problem is not with residents and no plausible explanation is forthcoming as to why connections have not been done to homes. "We find ourselves in this predicament because power lines and maps were not done appropriately hence the need to re do them," he suggested. Another resident, Godfrey July blamed the uneven distribution of electricity on congesting transformers in one area.
