SELEBI-PHIKWE: Residents of Ikageleng ward have called for research on the low turnout at kgotla meetings.

The decision to conduct a research on the matter was made during a recent meeting after Kgosi Biki Mosweu observed that numbers continue to dwindle.Expressing concern, Kgosi Mosweu of Ikageleng said it has now become a common  trend for many residents to shun kgotla meetings, as turnout is always low.  He mused that it could be that residents hate either him or kgotla employees.

Kgosi Mosweu explained that residents should know that a kgotla is a forum where developments and policies are discussed. He said people should not  expect their concerns to be addressed if they do not attend meetings. He added that it was impossible for the meetings to be held in each household because it would be time consuming.
One of the residents, Sylvester Masweu suggested that a research be conducted in Selebi-Phikwe and other big villages as a way of trying to establish why people no longer attend kgotla meetings. He suggested that people may no longer be interested in kgotla meetings as they want a different forum where they can meet. "It is only after doing the research that we can establish the cause. Maybe some of the members of the community feel that a kgotla setup is outdated. Even the time that meetings are held might be a contributing factor," he said.
