Reckless driver ordered to pay or face jail

FRANCISTOWN: Magistrate Mpho Molema found Molatlhegi Seleke, 55, a nurse at Jubilee Clinic, guilty on a single count of driving a motor vehicle without due care on Thursday at the Magistrate Court.

Seleke was ordered to pay P1,000 to the state by August 30 and failure to do so will mean six months imprisonment. The magistrate said he took into consideration the fact that Seleke was a first offender and a breadwinner to his family of four children. Also, his wife was pregnant, Molema said.When passing sentence Molema said on December 15, 2010 Seleke was driving a Ford motor vehicle when his car collided with a Corolla on New Bridge road in Francistown.

"On that day you were driving a Ford motor vehicle, registration number B 607 AAI and you collided with a Corolla with the registration number B 481 AHN and during trial you pleaded not guilty of the offence you were charged with, " Molema said.Molema said during trial the state brought three witnesses to prove their case and the accused did not bring any witness to prove his innocence."You explained that on that day you were going to work in the company of your colleague but you decided not to bring her before court as your witness. "It makes me suspect that you were not telling the truth when saying the traffic lights were green hence you proceeded with your driving, " he said.
