Recession stalls progress towards MDGs

The economic recession decelerated Botswana's steady progress towards attainment of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), unravelling strides made in poverty, health and education, a status report has revealed.

Unveiled yesterday, the Botswana MDGs Status Report 2010 indicates that while strong progress was made across most indicators, the recession slowed this with only four years left before the 2015 target date.

The recession contracted the economy by 3.7 percent in 2009, with widespread job losses, industrial scale-downs and closures contributing to socio-economic upheaval. The economically strategic mining sector shrank by a third, adversely affecting thousands of breadwinners and their dependents.
