Rapist of minor appeals conviction

FRANCISTOWN: Justice Modiri Letsididi of the High Court here will on June 21 deliver a verdict on an appeal launched on Friday by rape convict Lorato Poniso of Kgaphamadi ward in Kasane.

The prosecution has also filed to oppose Poniso's appeal. According to documents brought before court, on January 26, 2009, Poniso allegedly had unlawful carnal knowledge of a nine-year old girl in Kasane. Poniso was convicted and sentenced by a lower court to 10 years in jail for the offence.

In his defence, Poniso says the witnesses that were brought before court were not credible. He argues that the complainant told the court that she knew him, but when she was asked in court if she could describe the person who raped her, she said she could not.
