Rantao punches holes in Information Act

Gaborone private attorney Tshiamo Rantao has raised concern that the proposed Freedom of Information Act, drafted by the Attorney General, does not classify political parties as public authorities.

He warned that if the bill is passed in its current form, political parties would not be obliged to disclose information to the public.

Rantao, who was representing the Law Society of Botswana (LSB), said this during a panel discussion organised by the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Botswana Chapter on Tuesday evening to commemorate World Press Freedom Day, which falls on May 3.
