Ranchers fail to pay Ngwato Landboard

PALAPYE: The Ngwato Land Board is owed over P2 million in lease rental arrears by ranch owners, an official has said.

Deputy secretary of Ngwato Land Board, Otsile Ditiro has said the ranchers' debt is P2,901,935.77. Speaking during the Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency (CEDA) customer forum in Palapye, he said ranch owners are supposed to pay an annual rental of P0.70 per hectare.

He said that the collection of the debt is expensive for the landboard. But they have since engaged attorneys to collect the monies owed. Ditiro said the land authority could be using the money owed to finance its daily activities. He said the landboard is faced with challenges like land shortage. "Land is not increasing but the number of applications for land are on the rise," he said. Ditiro stated that no person should be allocated a second plot unless he or she has developed the first one.
