Ramsden confirms corruption at DRTS

Minister of Transport and Communications, Frank Ramsden has confirmed that corruption is so rife at the Department of Road Transport and Safety (DRTS) that one cannot talk about either of the two without mentioning the other.

In a brief interview with Mmegi yesterday, he said that they are conducting a number of investigations of officers who bypass systems to enrich themselves, while at the same time putting the safety of the public in jeopardy. "Yes I confirm that indeed there is corruption and we are conducting investigations regarding reports that we have received and observations we have made. Some of the officers have been indicted and no longer work there," he said

In 2007, a nationwide investigation was carried out on DRTS offices and it was discovered that corruption was rife at the department. Then minister Lesego Motsumi confirmed the rot in parliament and said they were doing something to address it. However, Motsumi, who was later appointed Minister of Health, said the report on the investigation would not be made public. Ramsden said yesterday that he has never laid his hands on the report or seen it. "I can't recall seeing the report at all," he said
