Former Gaborone city mayor Nelson Ramaotwana wants the Ministry of Local Government to clear an overdraft debt the Gaborone City Council (GCC) has with Barclays Bank of Botswana.

In a motion expected to be presented at the opening of the full council meetings next Monday, the dethroned Botswana National Front (BNF) civic leader has raised concern that the P21 million paid to Daisy Loo in 2005 was unbudgeted for and derailed council projects. The June 25-29 full council meeting will receive 24 motions and 33 questions. A predictably packed city chambers will on Tuesday hear from councillor Thuso Ogotseng, who feels Gaborone is under threat from scrap metal dealers.
Ogotseng wants the council to request the Ministry of Trade and Industry to proscribe scrap metal sales.
Lately, there have been reports that dealers have been buying vandalised Botswana Power Corporations (BPC) copper cables. Councillor Otseng wants minister Neo Moroka to ban the trade.
The BNF civic leader also intends to argue for the introduction of compulsory return of transport for city dwellers visiting the council's monitored health facilities.
With reports of many students being sent home for failure to pay school fees, councillor Leeme Kgopa wants GCC to request the Ministry of Education to stop the practice. Kgopa 's motion advocates the reinstatement of "free education as a matter of urgency".
Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) councillor Binkie Kerileng thinks government should avail the civic leaders some office in their wards as a way to boost community consultation and accelerated development.
As a move to try to enlighten the civic leaders, Specially elected councillor Odirile Motlhale intends to table a motion calling on the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning to come and address the councillors on Public Private Partnership (PPP), emphasising that there is need to brief councillors on the programme's success since the privatisation drive started. Motlhale also intends to request the GCC Secretariat "to compile a list of all motions passed by the current council with an update of what the council has achieved to date".
