Radibe urges journalists to unionize

FRANCISTOWN: Botswana Federation of Trade Unions (BFTU) president Jafta Radibe has a vision.

His vision is to see the formation of Botswana Journalists Union.Radibe was speaking at a BFTU labour laws seminar held at Adansonia hotel in Francistown. "Just like any other workers, journalists have to unionize. They work overtime and need union protection. I will make sure that they also unionize," said Radibe.It is not only journalists that Radibe wants to unionize. He said members of the uniform forces should also form their unions. He asserted that some of the so-called essential service workers are not essential.

The BFTU president talked about political affiliation saying that as individual union members they are free to join political parties of their choice. "The law doesn't discourage workers to support political parties. But the law says that such participation should not be in the open," sai Radibe. Dr Kholisani Solo, University of Botswana academic said all the International Labour Organizations (ILO) conventions need to be domesticated and enforced. He said some of the ILO conventions like the abolition of slavery and forced labour and freedom of association have found themselves in our constitution.
