Radibe gets top BFTU post

Japhta Radibe has been elected the new president of the Botswana Federation of Trade Unions (BFTU) during the organisation's 11th national congress in Gaborone over the weekend. The Botswana Teachers' Union (BTU) president ascended to the BFTU top seat after beating Botswana Mining Workers' Union (BMWU) secretary general, Jack Tlhagale, by three votes.

Radibe polled 100 votes while Tlhagale got 97.
President of the Botswana Secondary  Teachers' Union (BOSETU), Eric Ditau, is the new BFTU vice president. It was a good outing for teachers' unions which participated in a BFTU national congress for the first time after they were granted union status.    Previously, the teachers' unions used to operate as workers' associations.

Gadzani Mahotsa became the BFTU secretary general after flooring BMWU chairman, Chimidza Chimidzani. He will be deputised by Dafide Chengeta while Rachel Tshepe is the organising secretary.
