Proposed Mmadinare nature reserve meets hurdles

MMADINARE: Efforts by Mmadinare Development Trust to establish a nature reserve may not bear fruit because of the prohibitive cost of compensation.

For the reserve to be established, the landboard has said the trust must compensate all land-owners in the Matshwakwe Hills area. It is estimated that the exercise will require millions.Ngwato Landboard secretary Makgesi Marata told Mmegi that the process of land allocation demands that the trust explains how it is going to deal with people with plots where the reserved will be established. "The Tribal Act says that people must be adequately and promptly compensated. The landboard cannot do a study for the trust. We are just an adjudicating body," he said.
He estimated that the trust may need to pay compensation of about P15 million to evict commercial farmers and other developers who have been allocated plots in the area.

"We have referred the matter to them and asked them to make a detailed study. So the delay is with them, we are just waiting for their detailed study. Even the Ministry of Lands and Housing and Botswana Tourism Organsation are aware of this."
