Prisons' officerconvicted of corruption

FRANCISTOWN: A former supplies officer at the department of Prisons and Rehabilitation has been fined P4,000 or 10 years in prison for corruption. Moathodi Ramogapi, 32 and his family left the courtroom in tears after the sentence. He was charged with 20 counts of corruption.

Ramogapi pleaded guilty to awarding 20 purchase orders worth P160,000 to seven companies that belong to him in 2003. Before the awards, Ramogapi did not disclose to the department of prisons that he had interests in the companies. Chief Magistrate Kenneth Obeng was touched by the mitigation presented by defence lawyer Keitshegile Sechele who said that his client has been out of a job since 2003 when he was forced to resign from government employ.

"My client is struggling to make ends meet and his life has been disrupted as a result of this case," he said.
