Prisoners celebrate Fathers' Day

At a first ever Fathers' Day celebrations at Prisons in Gaborone, Men's Sector urged men to come together in making the day happy.

"This is history in the making," he told his audience of prisoners and officials who had attended the event. He said men should denounce all forms of violence against women and children. Kau said they disassociated themselves from those who violate. The day was meant to share messages on positive parenting by fathers with the theme 'Not in my name.' In his sermon, Pastor Musyani Silwawa of Assemblies of God called on fathers to be fathers of legacy. He said fathers had many roles, such as being the defenders of the family.
Silwawa said fathers must be guides and give direction to their children. He said that as a father, one must be a breadwinner though he does not necessarily have to be rich. He said that a father should be able to prepare his child for the challenges of their future lives.
Silwawa said that parents want churches and schools to nurture their children but that they have a primary responsibility to raise their children. Silwawa urged them to train them and guide them gently. "Do not impose on children demands beyond their capabilities and do not show favouritism among your children," he said. The pastor also advised that when disciplining the child, it should be reasonable, consistent and deserved. He also said they should warn their children against AIDS. Men's Sector had decided to celebrate this year's Fathers' Day through sermons organised for the public throughout the country. The Men's Sector stated that prisoners are part of the community who need to be equipped with life skills and account for their actions and decisions like any other man outside prison.
