Pressure mounts on Sata to fire acting CJ

LUSAKA: Pressure is mounting in Zambia for the exit of the acting chief justice and the appointment of a substantive holder of the post.

Zambia's former High Commissioner to Britain Justice Lombe Chibesakunda, who has acted since last year, is long past retirement age and a committee of the National Assembly unanimously voted against her confirmation on this basis.

The failure to appoint a substantive chief justice by President Michael Sata and perceptions by the opposition and some NGOs that she favours the governing Patriotic Front (PF) is fuelling pressure for her departure.
