Presidents to discuss BDP crisis

President Ian Khama was forced to postpone his national address over Radio Botswana yesterday evening in deference to former presidents Sir Ketumile Masire and Festus Mogae.

Khama postponed the address after a brief meeting with the former presidents to discuss the turmoil in the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP). Information reaching Mmegi indicates that it was agreed that the parties meet again today. Two days ago, the former presidents held another meeting with Khama to discuss national issues.

These latest meetings are meant to discuss internal strife within the ruling party. The two ex-presidents are concerned about the disunity in the party. Both are likely to talk to Khama about the suspension of BDP secretary general Gomolemo Motswaledi. They are expected to request for his reinstatement to achieve rapprochement in the party. The catch in the talks is that the debilitating fissures in the party could lead to a disastrous performance in the general elections.
