Poverty remains a challenge - Mokalake

TONOTA: Despite the government's efforts to eradicate poverty, unacceptably high levels of the scourge are still widespread, says the Minister of Local Government, Lebonaamang Mokalake.

Mokalake was speaking at a local government pitso aimed at consulting with stakeholders on community development issues.

Themed "Building Resilient Communities: Strategies For The Future", the pitso sought to strategise on issues of community development and to refocus the ministry's community development programmes. Mokalake said the concept of resilience had emanated from the concerns shared by the government over the waning spirit of self-help, which had led to extremely high poverty levels. There was need for urgent and concrete action to get rid of such poverty, pursuant to the ideals of Vision 2016, he noted.
