Pop Idols Botswana or is it Pub Idols

It's hard not having cable TV! For a lot of us poor folk in Botswana, that means going through the arduous task of navigating the poor programs on either Btv or GBCtv.

On one such evening last week, I decided to watch Pop Idols Botswana. Now, if you are a fan of good singing, I would really suggest that you don't watch Pop Idols Botswana because it is an insult to the ears. If you ever thought last year's was bad, this year's pool of 'talents' takes the cake. I can sing, in the shower! A lot of us can sing, in the comfort of our homes and other places where we do not have to subject people to the cruelty of our voices.

This was not the line of thinking taken by neither the 'artists' nor the judges on Pop Idols Botswana. Maybe for lack of better programs Btv is also culpable in insulting our ears. Pop Idols can qualify for a bloopers show, where people can laugh it off as a joke and an example of how not to sing. A friend of mine said that singing is a relative thing, that different cultures hear music differently. Yes, maybe for music, not for singing. Like soccer, like mathematics, like athletics, singing is a universal phenomenon that knows no boundary. And it is insulting to want to insinuate that the awful singers we have on Pop Idols Botswana represent a lot of singers in Botswana.
