Politicians urged to embrace party democracy

Scholars have called on the country's political parties to nurture, nurse and practice democracy rather than focusing on accusing one another of lack of democracy.

Speaking at a one-day conference held at the University of Botswana (UB) under the theme, 'Rethinking Democracy in Botswana - Old and New Challenges,' yesterday, various scholars pointed out that there is a need to refocus on the part political parties are playing to ensure that the country does not lose its grip on democratic principles going into the future.

Presenting a paper entitled 'Organisational Internal Democracy as a Pre-Requisite in Growing and Nurturing Democracy in Botswana,' Dr Emmanuel Botlhale said if political parties were to add value to democracy at national level, it is imperative that they embrace intra-party democracy.
