Politicians react warmly to Zuma's victory

Political parties in Botswana have welcomed the election of South Africa's former Deputy President Jacob Zuma to the presidency of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) at an acrimonious conference in Polokwane, the capital of that country's Limpopo Province, on Tuesday night.

Zuma had the support of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and the South African Communist Party (SACP), with whom the ANC is in an increasingly uneasy tri-partite alliance, and ANCYL, its militant youth league.

The Botswana National Front (BNF) has described Zuma's election as a sign of democracy. "The people have spoken," said Moeti Mohwasa, the publicity secretary of the official opposition, yesterday.
