Political roosters ready to be feasted?

It has been confirmed by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) that 146 independent candidates derisively referred to as 'Mekoko' (Roosters) will be contesting this year's general elections. Correspondent GALE NGAKANE writes that with so many roosters in the mix, the three main contenders in the coming general elections, Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), Botswana Congress Party (BCP) and the Botswana National Front (BNF) are in for a party come October 16

Wikipedia says a rooster is a male chicken, whose scientific name is Gallus gallus. It is also called a cock or chanticleer. But in local political language, a rooster is an independent candidate in an election. The IEC confirmed that of the 146 roosters, an unprecedented 15 would be vying for parliamentary seats, while the rest want to be councillors. There has never been an independent candidate winner at parliamentary level since Batswana started going to the polls in 1965.

Among the 15 roosters in the parliamentary race are Lobatse MP, Nehemiah Modubule and Gaborone West South legislator, Robert Molefhabangwe. The two decided to run as independents after they were sacked by the BNF. Cabinent minister and MP for Ngami, Jacob Nkate told Mmegi that mekoko are nothing but a nuisance in the electioneering period. "They do not stand a chance at all. I think the real competition will be from established parties like the BNF and BCP," said Nkate.
