Policy perpetuates rural poverty - cllr

MAUN: Government's policy that forbids construction of permanent homes in the Okavango Delta is regressive and perpetuates poverty, says councillor Kitso Ngande of Makgobokgobo.

Ngande, who was speaking to The Monitor in an interview over the weekend, said that the policy is in contradiction of the Community Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) policy whose eventual goal is to relieve communities in wildlife areas from poverty.

CBNRM seeks to protect wildlife and other natural resources outside the protected areas by giving them conditional resource use rights. It is also a rural poverty reduction initiative.
