Police shoot innocent man

RAMAPHATLE: A police officer shot and injured an innocent 20-year-old man, Botshelo Rathejwane, yesterday as villagers here protested the demolition of their houses. The officer whose name is known to Mmegi, had earlier on fired a warning shot to disperse villagers who tried to stop the bulldozer from demolishing their houses.

Curiously, the victim was not part of the group that was pelting police officers and land board personnel with stones. Hardly 10 minutes after the warning shot, villagers started throwing stones at police officers and the bulldozer. One officer got injured. An inspector then fired rubber bullets in the direction of Rathejwane's home, a short distance from a house that the bulldozer was razing to the ground, injuring him on both thighs.Superintendent Balisa Ntamba of Thamaga Police Station told Mmegi that Rathejwane was taken to Thamaga Hospital where he was treated and released.

"We have charged Rathejwane with common nuisance as he was causing trouble while police officers were trying to control the situation. He will appear before Thamaga Customary Court today (Tuesday)," said Ntamba. He said that his officer was not wrong to shoot Rathejwane as he wanted to arrest him.Contrary to Ntamba's account, Rathejwane was shot in his home. Police left him injured on the scene until village councillor, Ofentse Mafoko called the station commander and asked for help. Ntamba then ordered his charges to transport the victim to hospital.
