Matsiloje has become a hot spot for illegal mining activities
Illegal mining in the area has been on the rise since early last year amid reports that there is a lucrative market for illegally mined gold in the neighbouring Zimbabwe.
Most of the illegal miners are from Zimbabwe. On average police previously said they record more than 10 cases of illegal gold mining in a month. Just early last week, members of the Botswana Police Service arrested five minors and one man for illegally mining gold, highlighting the intensity of illegal gold mining activities in the Matsiloje area.
The sight of submerged yards and closed roads is an inconvenience and a clear sign that the capital’s water passages pose a problem to residents. With more rain forecast, this is not a time for panic, as Gaborone City Council (GCC) Mayor Oarabile Motlaleng rightly urges, but it is most certainly a time for urgent, collective action.His appeal for calm must be matched by a firm commitment from both the GCC authorities and every single resident....
