Police pocket P84m from traffic fines

The Botswana Police Service may be defrauding government of monies accrued from traffic fines, the latest auditor general's report says.

The report reveals that while Section Seven of the Road Traffic Fund Order provides that the police and government share the traffic fines equally, it has emerged that the police service last year alone pocketed P84,016,715 with only P19 million going to government.

When government hiked traffic fines in 2010, the police negotiated with government to get all or at least 50 percent of the traffic fines.
