Police Patrols Target Car Robberies

Gaborone West Police Station Commander, Bonnie Bareki has said they have intensified patrols at entertainment spots because of increasing robberies targeting motorists. He said such robberies are common in his beat.

The police regard such offences as street robberies. Bareki told Monitor that there have been incidents in which people who play loud music in their cars have been robbed at entertainment areas. Motorists in Gaborone have become increasingly vulnerable to muggings and robberies especially at night. A Gaborone man is currently admitted at Princess Marina Hospital because of injuries he sustained after a gang attacked him in his care with knives near the University of Botswana (UB).

The man said he was waiting for someone when the robbers pounced at around eight in the evening. His attackers took his money and jacket. He received several stab wounds and said one of the robbers tried to rip his stomach open with a knife but he managed to block the blow with his hands. He lamented that passers-by did not come to his rescue during the attack.
