Police officer refuses to give specimen after fatal accident

SELEBI-PHIKWE: A police officer has reportedly refused to provide breath specimen for tests after the car she was driving was involved in a fatal accident. Selebi-Phikwe Police Station commander, Superintendent Victor Nlebesi told Mmegi after the Francistown-based officer declined to give specimen in hospital where she was admitted after the accident.

The police suspect that the driver lost control of the vehicle, which then rammed into a security wall and overturned inside a residential compound, where it hit a 23-year-old man.

The man later died at Selebi-Phikwe Government Hospital. "The driver and other passengers are still hospitalised at the local hospital, while the other passenger has been transferred to Mahalapye Hospital," Nlebesi said. He stated that they are still investigating the cause of the accident.  He explained that it is an offence to refuse to provide the police with breath or blood specimen. He said the deceased is the 19th person to die in a road accident in Selebi-Phikwe this year.
