Police investigate assault claims against BCP councilor

A man has claimed that Botswana Congress Party (BCP) councillor Balatedi Tshepo assaulted him near Pop Inn Mall in Gaborone two weeks ago.

Metlha Otlaadisa says that the councillor and three other people abducted him at night saying that he had stolen a battery from a truck. He says the group bundled him into a vehicle and drove to an area behind the University of Botswana where he was whipped brutally with sjamboks.

He has reported the matter to Central Police Station in Gaborone. Superintendent K Mookodi from the station said that no charge has been laid yet and nobody has been arrested because they are still investigating the case. When contacted, Tshepo denied assaulting the complainant, though he said he has heard reports that he attacked Otlaadisa. He said his efforts to get hold of Otlaadisa has failed and he thinks he (Otlaadisa) is evading him. He suspects that Otlaadisa sent people to steal batteries from his truck.
