Three main opposition parties - the Botswana National Front (BNF), Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD) and Botswana Congress Party (BCP) - have been told to forget about staging any demonstrations or political rallies in Gaborone, BNF secretary general Akanyang Magama has said.

The parties had applied for permits to stage peaceful demonstrations this coming Saturday to show solidarity with striking government workers, but the Botswana Police Service is said to have turned down the requests. The parties planned to march from the open space between Gaborone City Council (GCC) and the Old Library. They have also been denied the right to hold a political rally at the place, which is less than 100m metres from the Gaborone Senior Secondary School (GSSS) grounds where the striking civil servants gather every morning.

Magama said that they have also been denied permission to hold a political rally at the Gaborone Bus Rank.
