Police forensic lab delays court cases

A few months after the Department of Administration of Justice outlined initiatives to speed up cases at Magistrates courts and the High Court in order to tackle its backlog of many years, another challenge has emerged to bedevil progress - shortage of manpower at the Police Forensic Laboratory.

It has emerged that the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is not happy with the slow progress the lab is making in analysing evidence.

At a recent hearing in Molepolole, Chief Prosecutions Counsel Kgosietsile Ngakaagae complained that the police forensic laboratory was delaying the case before court by its failure to produce results of ballistic tests on firearms taken to it last year.
