FRANCISTOWN: Toi-toying government employees clashed with riot police on Tuesday morning at Thapama Circle here where they had gathered after marching from Chedu Choga Freedom Square.

Afterwards, the Chairman of BOFEPUSU's Francistown region, Time Moupi, told Mmegi he was surprised because the workers - some of whom sustained rubber bullet and baton wounds - had only gone shopping when the police attacked them.

He and other union leaders said they were in the process of contacting the Officer Commanding the district, Alakanani Makobo, to register their displeasure. Makobo's office number went unanswered when Mmegi subsequently tried to contact him. However, Mmegi can report that the police were provoked into action after the striking workers burned tyres on the road from Chedu Choga and blocked traffic at the circle where the clash occurred.
