Police conduct operation to control road accidents

The police are conducting a number of targeted operations focusing on alcohol and speeding offences across the country to control spiralling road accidents.

The police have said in a statement that they are heading to Mahalapye, Palapye and Serowe in a few days time. During the operation, they will step-up sobriety check-point operations, red light operations, and leverage on the strengths of vehicle flagging. "All our highway patrol teams will be on the road to ensure a synchronised and seamless operation across police division, district and station jurisdictions," the police say. The statement expressed concern at the growing number of accidents since the beginning of the year. They said that the A1 to Kanye has turned into a danger zone because of the high volume of traffic travelling along it. "Our statistics further show that in most of these accidents, the youth are the most affected as both road traffic victims and/or perpetrators.

To these, signs of alcohol impairment are clearly evident especially from the manner of driving. Most of these accidents occur over weekends during late night and early morning hours," the police say in a statement.
