Police bust Syndicate

Police have intercepted a syndicate operating in Gaborone defrauding financial institutions of tens of thousands of Pula.

It is said that the 'broad' syndicate targeted the University of Botswana section of 'lost and found' goods where they took national identity cards for students. They then proceed to the banks where they open savings accounts using the ID cards.

"They then go and scan the Omang to replace the picture of the card owner with theirs. Since the syndicate is broad, involving a number of people having access to technology, they have somehow managed to get some people's pay slips, they replaced the names with theirs and had successfully applied for loans. The total amount of the loans so far reported to us amounts to P114,000," a source at the Serious Crime Squad said.
