Police block unions from petitioning Chiefs

Union leaders were stopped in their tracks yesterday when permission granted by the police to present a petition to traditional leaders was withdrawn. The permission allowed the unionists to present a petition on the on-going civil servants' strike to different Kgotla in the country.

The unions wanted to petition paramount chiefs and tribal authorities to engage government about the deteriorating state of education, which is being made worse by the strike. Information reaching Mmegi indicate that some tribal authorities had seen the letters requesting them not to receive the petition and they politely declined to meet the unions.  In Moshupa, a Kgosi agreed to meet and receive the petition outside the Kgotla.

However, when the singing and dancing workers were ready to deliver the petition, the police told them there has been a change. The police said the petition could not be delivered inside the Kgotla or under any tree. A similar situation was reported to have obtained in Kasane.
