Police blame careless driving, not alcohol

Contrary to  government's stance that alcohol is the leading cause of road accidents, a 2006-2007 police statistical report shows that alcohol takes a distant sixth position out of the 11 causes of road accidents in Botswana.

At the top is careless driving, which shows that in 2006, a total of 12, 342 accidents were reported countrywide, whilst the number increased to 14, 367 the following year.

The second major cause is domestic/wild animals. In 2006, the report says, 2, 205 cases were reported whilst the following year the figure rose to 2, 817.
