Pilane denies threatening violence if he lost presidency

Sidney Pilane has dismissed as "utter nonsense" allegations that he had threatened to resort to violence if he did not win the presidential position of the Botswana Movement for Democracy (BMD), at the party's inaugural national elective congress on Sunday evening.

In a telephone interview with Mmegi, Pilane who lost the position to Gomolemo Motswaledi with a margin of 325 votes, said he would never risk his name because the presidency of the BMD is "nothing compared to my name and reputation."

"In any event, I lost badly.  Did I resort to violence? I have sought political office before, I lost. Did I ever resort to violence?" he asked.
