Phikwe schools doing well - headteacher

SELEBI-PHIKWE: Meepong Community Junior Secondary School headmaster Sechaba Oabile says although there has been evidence of good work among Selebi-Phikwe schools, particularly the primary and junior schools, the challenge for teachers is the ever-changing performance initiatives.

Oabile urged teachers to explore and make good use of the Performance Management System (PMS). He noted that the Phikwe schools continue to do well because they apply initiatives like WITS and PMS. He, however, said though the schools have been performing well nationally, much needs to be done to boost performance at the senior secondary school as well.
He noted that despite the teacher being the mainstay of all professions, teachers still lack resources, are subjected to student indiscipline and poor working conditions. He also noted that there is a challenge for teachers to form partnerships with the government and teacher organisations to support the students.
For his part, Bosele Hotel's food and beverages manager Surprise Mathala said teachers aspire to see the education system being more flexible streaming so that kids can learn at their own pace to avoid being in a single stream for all subjects and be pigeon-holed. He said the nation ought to have teachers who provide more support to children with special needs.
Mathala said another priority is to level the education system up across the board spectrum of society.
"Our income contributions are stretching out - the higher incomes are doing well yet the lower incomes are having more of a struggle."
He added that this is a problem that must be solved through education by ensuring that all students have a good system and good education that would enable them to get the best chance to have the skills and end up on the upside of the income divide.
Mathala noted that this could be achieved through the education system which has excellence across the board. He said in a good education system, every child must be able to benefit regardless of the family status.
"Another aspect of having a school system, which is good across the board, is that it must take care of children who do not do well academically. At the same time, our attitude should be a positive one."
