Phikwe Hosts World AIDS Day Commemoration

SELEBI-PHIKWE: National celebrations to mark this year's World AIDS Day in Botswana will be held in Selebi-Phikwe, the District Officer (DO) Khumo Keeng has said. The officer said that plans are at an advanced stage to hold the event on December 1.

He said that the AIDS Day commemoration is an internationally recognised event that has been established to encourage people to come together and reflect on the tragedy brought by HIV/AIDS and to reflect on the strategies, programmes and achievements carried out to combat the epidemic.

A steering committee chaired by the DO has been appointed in Selebi-Phikwe to coordinate the celebrations. There are already seven sub-committees planning for the event. The sub-committees are handling protocol, logistics, transport, catering, decorations, media and publicity. The committees will monitor and evaluate how the event is going to influence the community. They will decide on the activities to be focused on.
